Goal for the Day: Preserve a Happy Memory

Take some time today to go through your stash of mementos—everyone has one. Find one object that represents a special moment, event or memory. You can easily preserve and display this object in your home. Be creative. Make that object a monument to that memory and give it a place of importance. I guarantee you’ll smile every time you see it. That’s the sort of good feeling we all want to carry with us throughout the day.

Can you help me? I have several very old square-head nails that were used in the construction of my great grandparents' house. When the house was torn down years ago my mother sent me the nails, knowing I love stuff like that. But I'm at a loss as to how to display them! What could I do with these sentimental old nails??

Hi Kay,

I love that you want to display those nails and I'm even more excited that your mother sent them to you! Off the top of my head, I can think of a few ways you could display them. First, you could put them in a small, clear glass bud vase--one short enough so that an inch or so of the top of the nail would show. You could also put them in a shadow box. You can find pre-made shadow boxes with glass fronts in any craft store. Line the inside of the box with a fabric color of your choice and then mount the nails in an artistic way using thin wire tied through the back. This would give them a look of importance that they so rightfully deserve. This next idea may sound a little strange, but hear me out...You could use some colored, sturdy thread to tie around the head of each nail. Then, you could braid the thread together and have sort of a tassel of nails which you could hang from a lamp switch, the lock on a window or a drawer pull. I'll do some more thinking about that and get back to you. Thanks for reading!

I had thought of the shadow box idea but I am really liking the tassel of nails idea. Hmmm....
