Treat of the Week: A Beautiful Blueberry and Peach Pie

Pie is a wonderful thing. Tender yet crisp, sweet yet tart, pie is fruit and dessert all in one—it’s everything you could possibly want.

For Father’s Day, the dessert of choice is often pie, and the all-time favorite is my mother’s blueberry and peach pie. This isn’t just your usual made-in-a-tin from a pre-made crust with canned filling kind of pie. This is real fruit—stout pieces of peach, plump blueberries. This is a homemade crust—dusted with cinnamon and as flakey as a crust can be. This is, also, an enormous pie. With a lovely basket-weave pattern to adorn it, it’s the kind of pie you would have seen on a Southern table after the Civil War. And, thankfully, we can have it now without the threat of Yellow Jack.

Served with freshly whipped cream, this pie was the perfect way to say, “Happy Father’s Day.” If you’re a pie aficionado, experiment with your own combinations of fruits and fillings to see what wonderful creation you can invent.

This is my favorite combination. You can never find this at a bakery. I wish I could bake one myself, but I'm a moron in the kitchen. Your mom always makes really good looking things.

All I got for father's day was a gift certificate to Starbucks. Would you accept that for this pie?

No, Gene. Sorry, we don't take gift cards. : )
